And by connecting the factory to the internet, these same systems and machines can provide greater output. This can enable better planning, with bottlenecks swiftly identified, more precise calculation of costs and lower energy consumption (machines can be turned off while not it use). Maintaining a fast, secure connection is the most important challenge.

Basic concepts include the IIoT (the Industrial Internet Of Things), big data, CPPS (Cyber-physical production system) and 5G.

The IoT (Internet of Things) is the network through which products, tools and components find the “right route” by communicating with each other (via the internet). The IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) therefore refers to the connection of machines or components in industry to the internet.

Big data involves combining data with algorithms in order to improve the likelihood of identifying problems in machines, assembly and logistics, etc. It does not necessarily involve a large volume of data.

An abbreviation of Cyber-physical system, CPS is a system controlled by an algorithm which is also closely connected to the internet and its users. This means that the IIoT and big data are applied to a physical system, and involve both sensors and control. An example of a CPPS (Cyber-physical production system) is an AGV system (AGV stands for automated guided vehicle) which is controlled by orders issued over the internet and interacts with operators and other AGVs.

5G is the fifth generation wireless system. It is considerably more powerful than today’s existing mobile networks as it deploys multiple parallel transmission routes.
