In the past, the machines were driven until they broke

Maintenance has been developed and digitalisation creates new opportunities. Lars Lindau, or Lillen, who everyone calls him, started at SKF on August 8, 1982. He has experienced how maintenance has evolved over the years. And how digitalization creates new opportunities. Today he works with condition monitoring, which includes measurements and analysis of the machines' status with our customers.

- When I started at SKF you had a completely different view of maintenance. They drove until the machines broke down and we had difficulty repairing at the same rate as things were broken, despite a large number of repairers, Lillen says.

In the late 1980s, things started to change.

- Then they realized that maintenance needs to be done more efficiently and started going from breakdown-based maintenance to calendar-based maintenance, i.e. two major stops a year. Now the computer (PC) also became more common on the workshop floor, which enabled more complicated analysis.

The biggest advantage of his job is that you never become fully educated.

- I am constantly facing new challenges and that is why I have stayed at SKF for so long. We are constantly working towards more improved and preventative maintenance and refine the monitoring systems. It happens so much. It is becoming more and more wireless and more and more sophisticated tools are being developed for data analytics that provide better decision support,” concludes Lillen.

More about condition control

Monitoring the condition or condition control is about making the right efforts before a costly machine breakdown occurs and planning your downtime in a smarter way. SKF has both hardware and software to easily get started with more digital maintenance work, for example SKF Enlight QuickCollect or SKF Multilog On-line System IMx-8.
