Machine safety for collaborative robot stations - thesis project

A collaborative application that is manufactured for close collaboration between robot and human involves not only production technical possibilities but also safety challenges. Machine safety is therefore an important aspect to take into account and a risk assessment must be carried out to find out all the risks associated with the station. This article describes the CE marking process that was done for the demonstrator Monteringsfabriken in the Smarta Fabriker project in the spring of 2019.

Machine safety is the highest priority so that people are not exposed to the risk of injury and feel safe at the robot station. The type of application controls the scope and work process for the safety work.

Basic concepts are CE marking, risk, risk assessment, force measurement, standards and directives.

Before implementation in production, the station must be CE-marked, which mainly means that the manufacturer certifies that the station is safe to use. This is done by following the standards and directives that are to be applied, e.g. ISO / TS 15066. These are official documents used as a guide to meet the legal requirements.

A risk is a function of the probability and severity of an event that can have harmful consequences. The risk assessment is an important part of the CE marking process to find all the risks associated with the station. For collaborative robot stations where there is a risk of collision, a force measurement can be performed to verify that the forces in the event of a collision are not too high. Examples of how a force measurement is performed are shown in the video below.
